It looks like 2012 is already shaping up to be a pretty good year for quotes. First Scott Boras compares Prince Fielder to Henry Kissinger and now one of Steve Garvey's sons says he's not a fan of putting the "student" into "student-athlete."
It's true. After one semester at USC, Ryan Garvey says there was way too much studying getting in the way of his professional baseball dreams. So he's off to Riverside Community College for a short stint before entering this summer's draft with hopes of being selected higher than he was in the 2011 edition (Philadelphia Phillies, 15th round).
"I passed all my classes, I'm eligible, it was great, but I was studying from 9:30 to 6 every day and I was more worried about school than baseball, and my thing was to go there to play baseball," Ryan said.
Heh. "My thing was to go there to play baseball." With all the positive news about the Trojan football and basketball programs in recent years, I can't imagine where Ryan Garvey possibly got the impression that USC was a professional athlete factory with little to no accountability in the classroom.
All joking aside, though, at least he had the foresight to make this decision before he actually played a game for USC and pushed his draft eligibility back another three years. This way someone who's actually interested in receiving an education gets his scholarship spot and Garvey gets to chase his dream of becoming a big-league ballplayer like his father without all that pesky book-learning getting in the way.
