When he sold the Los Angeles Dodgers to Magic Johnson's group in 2012 for $2.15 billion, fans widely cheered that Frank McCourt no longer owned the team. But, there's a price for everything. We learned Monday exactly how much McCourt profited from the sale, which included a significant amount of debt assumption, along with everyone's favorite: Federal and state taxes.
The final profit: $1.278 billion, reporter Bill Shaikin of the Los Angeles Times reports. And he (McCourt, not Shaikin) still has a 50 percent stake in the Dodger Stadium parking lots. Does that also mean McCourt still has a stake in doing right by Bryan Stow, the Giants fan who was brutally beaten after a Dodgers-Giants game two years ago? He probably could use some assistance as he continues to make a grueling recovery.
Will McCourt — and his parking-lot partners, the Dodgers — finally do the right thing and help Stow get on with the rest of his life? Considering how much the Dodgers and McCourt are worth, heaven knows they could afford to. However, it might open a can of legal worms if they appeared to take responsibility by giving Stow money.
"You mean every time someone gets beaten to a pulp in one of our parking lots, we have to bear some of the burden?"
It's a hard-knock life, ain't it?
In the meantime, if you're able, perhaps consider sending Stow whatever you can in order to assist in paying his medical bills. It doesn't make you responsible for his wounds, but it does make you a kinder person.
