Spring Headlines: John Danks returns from shoulder surgery, Adrian Beltre makes Cactus debut

White Sox left-hander John Danks had a simple take on his first outing after having shoulder surgery:

Phew, glad that's over.

Danks threw 35 pitches, allowing a run, two hits and no walks in a 6-2 victory the Giants. He said, via the Associated Press:

''I feel good right now,'' said Danks, who threw mostly fastballs and changeups. ''The test will be tomorrow and the next day. So far, so good. As I was going back out there for the second and third innings, I didn't feel like I was losing anything. If anything, it was starting to come to me a little bit.''

Chicago's opening-day starter in 2012, Danks made only nine starts amid shoulder problems and was shut down in late July before arthroscopic surgery fixed a capsule tear and removed debris in the rotator cuff and biceps.

Beltre is back, too: It was merely a sore right calf that had kept him out, but Texas Rangers slugger Adrian Beltre expressed relief that he got into a spring game for the first time. He went 1 for 3, also reaching on an error, and turned a nifty around-the-horn double play, MLB.com reports.

"Coming out of the box quick, swinging hard, a quick reaction at third -- everything went fine," the Rangers third baseman said after he was removed in the fifth inning of a victory over San Diego.

Beltre also said he's still a possibility to play in the World Baseball Classic at some point. The Dominican Republic begins pool play Thursday.

Cody Ross awaits MRI results on calf: New Arizona Diamondbacks outfielder Cody Ross remains on the sidelines because of a sore left calf. Originally scratched from the lineup Friday, the team sent him for an MRI on Monday, reports Nick Piecoro of the Arizona Republic:

Still, manager Kirk Gibson remained unfazed, saying he was not concerned and that it’s only tightness. But the fact that they’re sending him for an MRI probably isn’t good.

Sick closer: He's not having the best of springs, Jonathan Papelbon. He was scratched from a scheduled appearance Tuesday because of a cold, the Philadelphia Phillies say. Perhaps it's for the best. Matt Gelb of the Philadelphia Inquirer notes that Paps has allowed eight runs, seven hits and three walks in 1 2/3 innings so far in Grapefruit League action. Gelb adds that the Phillies are not worried about Papelbon's results.

Spring injury headquarters: Matt Snyder of CBS Eye on Baseball did a swell job getting up to date regarding other recent injuries, including news on Phil Hughes of the Yankees, Jesse Crain of the White Sox and Starlin Castro of the Cubs.

U.S.A.! U.S.A.!: Cy Young knuckleballer R.A. Dickey will get the start for Team USA in its WBC opener, manager Joe Torre has announced. It's not quite the same thing as the Olympics, but Dickey was on the bronze medal-winning U.S. team during the Atlanta games.

“A lot of this experience for me is redemption,” Dickey said. “This is a chance for me, at least through my lens, at redemption and you don’t often get that opportunity.”

Team USA opens against Mexico at Chase Field on Friday.
