Yes, that was Francis Ford Coppola taking in the Philadelphia Phillies' 5-2 win over the San Francisco Giants at AT&T Park on Monday night. But after watching the game live, I'm fairly certain the only reason the director got any screen time was that the CSN television crew was busy talking about Eric Byrnes (front row, middle) and Giants president Larry Baer (second row, left). Coppola's presence only got an offhanded mention and only then because it seemed that a producer whispered in the ear of Duane Kuiper and Mike Krukow.
"There's one of the most famous directors in film history enjoying the game, but back to the story of Byrnesie's burgeoning softball career."
Coppola and his entourage may have been treated like outsiders, but it was still nice to see the "Apocalypse Now" director in the stands for Tim Lincecum's latest struggle. (See what I did there?)
I'm also kind of impressed that Coppola was still at the game in the top of the ninth inning, but perhaps I shouldn't have been surprised. Godfather III, after all, certainly taught us a lot about his dedication to overseeing an unsatisfying ending.
