Twins take Target practice on Jeremy Guthrie

How did right-hander Jeremy Guthrie stay so cool Thursday night at Target Field? Though the Kansas City Royals found themselves on the downside of a 3-1 score to the Minnesota Twins, two positive things occurred involving Guthrie.

Basically, it was that somebody had lazed a target (a TARGET!) on Guthrie's face and the Twins batters took dead aim on it, yet he managed to keep his face intact.

In the bottom of the first, Joe Mauer hit a line drive up the middle that somehow avoided hitting Guthrie between the eyes. It was a screamer.

Guthrie later supplied a quote on Twitter:

Glad my face missed that ball. Back at 'em tomorrow Royals.

Calmer than you would be, dudes.

Whoa!

Later in the fifth inning, Pedro Florimon lined a pitch up the middle that Guthrie caught with his glove — as his face safely had moved to the right. Florimon's liner didn't have the tail that Mauer's had. But, jeez, poor Mr. Real J-Guts.

"Well, we're at Target Field tonight," broadcaster Ryan Lefebvre said, "and Jeremy Guthrie must feel like he has one of those big, bright-red targets on his jersey. This time he makes a play."

Added analyst Red Hudler: "Nice play by the glove."
