Justin Verlander wants in the home run derby — or so he says on Twitter

Apparently when you're Justin Verlander, Cy Young awards, no-hitters, an MVP, kickin' it with Kate Upton and having a pretty good golf game just aren't enough. Verlander now apparently wants in the MLB Home Run Derby.

While teammates Prince Fielder and Miguel Cabrera are the Detroit Tigers you'd figure for Home Run Derby contenders, Verlander has hopped aboard a Twitter campaign to get him into this year's derby.

Amazing idea - I'm in!RT @kshem08: Just voted @justinverlander for the 2013 Homerun Derby! @mlb #VoteVerlander twitter.com/kshem08/status…

He followed that with a #VoteVerlander call — since write-in votes are allowed on the Home Run Derby ballot. He even changed his Twitter avatar to a picture of himself at bat.

In case you're thinking Verlander is one of those good-hitting pitchers hiding out in the American League — no, he's not. He's had 24 career at-bats and has never gotten a hit. He's struck out in 14 of those. Sure, a home run derby is a tad different — but thems the facts, folks.

What might be interesting, though, is a pitcher home run derby. We've already watched Tim Hudson, Clayton Kershaw, Yovani Gallardo and Travis Wood hit homers this season, the latter two actually have hit a pair. Let's see how Verlander would do against those guys.

Baseball is back. Don't miss anything.
