Of all the things I thought I might wake up to this morning, Joe Magrane appearing on "American Idol" as his daughter Shannon tried out for the judges ranked somewhere down by Dan Schatzeder eating bug larvae on Fear Factor or Tommy Herr being marooned on Survivor.
And yet it really happened as six-foot-tall Shannon held her own on the never-ending national karaoke contest. Meanwhile, Joe Magrane — a 6-foot-6 lefthander who started two games for the St. Louis Cardinals in the 1987 World Series — was able to see Shannon's shining moment from the best seat in the house with the rest of his lovely family.
"She's an incredibly gifted singer,'' Joe told Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times on Wednesday night. "Between my wife's yelling and my announcing, we created a super hybrid.''
I usually don't make a habit of watching weekly interventions for aging rock singers, so I can't really say how far Shannon will make it on American Idol. But I think I can confidently predict that Joe is going to get plenty of guff from his fellow MLB Network analysts for not slugging Steven Tyler after the singer called Shannon "hot, humid and happening." Seriously, a guy leering at your daughter, despite being roughly four times older than her, has to call for at least a fastball up and in? Does it not?
Anyway, best of luck to Shannon, who is a sophomore in high school. It's quite clear that she's making her father and the rest of her family very proud.
