Now it gets Ryu: With 45,431 fans watching at Dodger Stadium on Tuesday night, plus a live TV audience tuning in from Korea where it was late Wednesday morning, left-hander Hyun-Jin Ryu got so-so results in his major league debut. The San Francisco Giants, behind lefty Madison Bumgarner's dominating performance, beat the Los Angeles Dodgers 3-0. Ryu, who cost the Dodgers $36 million plus a $25.7 negotiating fee that went to his league in Korea, allowed three runs — one earned — and 10 hits in 6 1/3 innings. Ryu also had five strikeouts with no walks.
''Their hitters were pretty aggressive in the early part of at-bats,'' Ryu said through a translator. ''I couldn't really get my timing.''
That didn't seem to be a problem for Bumgarner, who struck out six and pitched two-hit ball over eight innings — nearly as good as Clayton Kershaw was for the Dodgers on opening day. Bumgarner also struck out six.
The Giants added to a 1-0 lead with two runs in the seventh thanks in part to a pair of errors by Dodgers shortstop Justin Sellers.
Behold, the power of Troy: Troy Tulowitzki is healthy again — someone knock on wood — and the Colorado Rockies love having him back in the lineup. Tulo hit a home run for the second straight game, helping the Rox to an 8-4 victory at Milwaukee, also the first career win for new manager Walt Weiss. Tulowitzki, who missed four months of the 2012 season because of an injured groin that required surgery, also homered and drove in two on opening day at Miller Park.
M's >> A's: Michael Morse hit two home runs and Hisashi Iwakuma performed like the King for the Seattle Mariners in a 7-1 victory against the Oakland Athletics. Morse, who looks more like Sacha Baron Cohen (above) with every passing moment, clubbed a three-run homer and added a solo shot to help Seattle improve to 2-0. He also made a nice running catch on a Coco Crisp drive to right. Iwakuma struck out seven and allowed no walks as the A's offense struggled for a second straight game (except for Yoenis Cespedes hitting a solo jack). King Felix Hernandez led a shutout effort on opening day, so the M's pitching so far has been pretty tough.
