Mason Williams, the top prospect in the New York Yankees organization, was arrested for DUI early Thursday morning in Tampa. But there's an interesting wrinkle in his case: His blood-alcohol level was below the legal limit.
Williams, a 21-year-old outfielder, was pulled over at 2:45 a.m. after he was spotted driving his 2012 Range Rover erratically and clocked going 50 mph in a 40-mph zone. Williams' BAC was measured around .06, below the .08 legal limit. However, he failed a field sobriety test and, according to the Tampa Bay Times, showed "clues of impairment." So he couldn't count backward or touch his finger to his nose or some such thing.
It's not exactly Yovani Gallardo blowing nearly three times the legal limit, but it is another player acting irresponsibly around alcohol, which is becoming more and more of a problem in baseball. It'll be interesting to see what happens with this case. A savvy lawyer might be able to get it thrown out. But the prim-and-proper Yankees can't be happy to see this from their top minor leaguer.
Williams was the Yankees fourth-round draft pick in 2010. He ranked No. 32 on Baseball America's top prospects list before this season. Currently, he's playing with the Single-A Tampa Yankees.
