The San Diego Padres, currently 4-10 and last in the National League West, could use a boost. So they'll happily welcome Chase Headley back to the lineup on Wednesday night.
The Padres activated Headley, who missed a month with a fractured thumb, from the 15-day disabled list and he's batting third in Wednesday's series finale against the Los Angeles Dodgers. Headley lead the National League in RBIs last season with 115 and hit .286/.376/.498. He was named a silver slugger, won a gold glove and finished fifth in MVP voting.
To make room for Headley, the Padres sent Cameron Maybin to the 15-day disabled list. Here's more from MLB.com's Corey Brock
"Chase had a monster year last year," Padres catcher Nick Hundley said Tuesday.
Four different players saw time at third base in Headley's absence — Jedd Gyorko, Jesus Guzman, Cody Ransom and Yonder Alonso, who actually moved there mid-inning last week against the Dodgers. The four combined for five errors in 14 games.
Headley returns after the Padres had one of their best offensive games of the season on Tuesday, beating the Dodgers 9-2. The Padres have won two games in a row for the first time this season. Should they pull off the sweep, it would be the first time since 2006 the Padres swept the Dodgers in L.A.
If Headley's able to continue his success of 2012, he might not be in San Diego for too much longer. He's considered prime trade bait. He's a free agent in 2015 and arbitration-eligible after this season.
Baseball is back. Don't miss anything.
