Zack Greinke elbow update: Los Angeles Dodgers pitcher gets platelet-rich plasma injection, 2-3 days rest

The visit by Zack Greinke to Los Angeles Dodgers team physician Dr. Neal El Attrache on Monday went fine, True Blue L.A. reports. The wealthy right-hander was diagnosed with inflammation in the back of his pitching elbow. The doctor with the unbeatable name injected platelet-rich plasma into Greinke's elbow, he prescribed anti-inflammatory medication and he told Greinke to rest 2-3 days before resuming his throwing program.

The Dodgers had sent Greinke back to Los Angeles citing an "abundance of caution" after he was scratched from his most recent scheduled start in the Cactus League. Well, better safe than sorry. Of course, having to send Greinke from greater Phoenix to Los Angeles is kind of scary, considering the money (up to $159 million), they'll be paying him over the next six seasons.

True Blue L.A. writes:

The Dodgers say Greinke ... will resume a "progressive throwing program" in two to three days.

Greinke had an MRI in Arizona last week, which showed no structural damage to the ligaments or tendons of the elbow. Greinke threw a bullpen session after the MRI, and wowed manager Don Mattingly.

"I was in there the other day when he was throwing that bullpen and if that's a guy that's hurt," Mattingly said Monday morning. "If there is something serious going on that would be a shocker."

Mattingly was on it all along. I'd like to add something, though.

What is the moral difference between Greinke taking an injection of platelet-rich plasma and doing a steroid that's on a list of banned substances that has the same purpose — to speed recovery? Both substances aid his performance. It's hypocrisy. That is all.
