We didn't need any more evidence that nothing can go right for the Philadelphia Phillies this season, but one of their young and surehanded fans provided it on Tuesday night.
The situation: With two outs in the bottom of the seventh inning, Minnesota's Ben Revere lifted a foul to third base territory at Target Field. Philadelphia's Mike Fontenot gave chase and it looked like he was going to make the play for the third out. But then a boy in a Phillies cap and shirt — was he roadtripping or a transplant to the Twin Cities via Trenton? — reached up and did this:
.
Altogether now: Bartman'd!
Gifted with new life, Revere hit a RBI single to make the score 11-7. That would prove to be the final margin of the contest, meaning that the boy's souvenir hunt padded Revere's stats more than he actually hurt the team he showed up to root for. (It should be noted that the boy made the catch entirely within the stands; there was no reaching out onto the field.)
Revere was appreciative of the boy's grab when speaking with reporters later:
''I owe that little kid dinner,'' Revere said with a chuckle. 'He helped me out a little bit there.''
It's actually kind of funny that Fontenot look barely moved after seeing the end of the inning vanish into the boy's glove. There weren't any Moises Alou-type histrionics — the stakes were, eeeeh, just a little bit lower — but I like to think there was a little admiration for what was a pretty good play by the young fan.
And who knows? Maybe the Phillies could use the kid's help on the field. Tuesday's loss felled the Phillies' record to 29-34 and they still occupy the basement of the NL East, 9 1/2 games behind the first-place Washington Nationals. That's the farthest they've trailed since 2006, one year before the start of their extended division dominance.
