Mark Teixeira out 8-10 weeks with wrist tendon injury

The New York Yankees were hoping for 8-10 days, but the right tendon wrist injury to slugger Mark Teixeira will keep him out of the lineup much longer. It's more like 8-10 weeks. Teixeira, who had been away at Team USA camp for the World Baseball Classic, hurt himself taking swings at a batting tee Tuesday.

The spring of discontent for the Yankees continues. They've already lost Curtis Granderson until May because of broken forearm. They won't have Alex Rodriguez back until midseason (maybe) because of hip surgery. Right-hander Phil Hughes has a sore back. And their GM, Brian Cashman, broke his ankle skydiving. They're a mess right now. And they need a hitter. Some kind of hitter.

The Yankees powerful lineup of 2012 is elsewhere:

MLB Trade Rumors keeps up on many of the possibilities, and they're throwing out the names of Carlos Lee and Aubrey Huff, who are free agents. Both also have "experience" at third base but, no, the Yankees don't want to play them there to back up Kevin Youkilis if they can help it. The Bronx also could urge Nick Johnson out of retirement. What are the odds that he'd get hurt again?

They already added Travis Hafner from Cleveland, but he's not able to play the field, manager Joe Girardi and Cashman said. He's strictly a DH. Juan Rivera is on the roster too, but he'll be needed to play the outfield with Granderson out.

Teixeira's career continues to sputter. He was troubled by a sore left wrist in 2012 and he missed the end of the season because of a leg injury. Teixeira had been having an admirable preseason off the field; He made an appearance as a headbanger in the musical "Rock of Ages," and humbly admitted to being overpaid in a great interview. Those are reasons beyond baseball to root for him. Hopefully he'll get over this wrist tendon thing and get back into the lineup, and before his "best years" pass him by. The Yankees need him.
