Miguel Cabrera launches long home run over tiki bar at Bright House Field (Video)

New baseball highlights, from Clearwater, Fla., on The Stew!

Detroit Tigers slugger Miguel Cabrera appears to be in mid-season form in committing absolute cowhide-icide against Jonathan Papelbon, who (phunny Phillies fans might say) also appears to be in mid-season form. Ouch, he hurt it, way over Frenchy's tiki bar in left field. That might have been over Frenchy Francoeur, and he's in Arizona with the Royals.

The Tigers won 10-1.

That's Tom McCarthy ("It's not coming back") and Sarge Matthews ("Uh oh") on the call for Phillies TV.

Question asked by @jasoncollette: Did Cabrera hit the ball further relative to how much Papelbon missed his spot? Paps might as well have stood in front of home plate and let Cabrera hit it out of his hand. This was funny, though:

Miguel Cabrera said the "wind" aided his mammoth HR in the fifth. Alex Avila retorted: "Funny -- that same LF wind was blowing in on me."

It's spring training, so I'm not sure about estimates on home-run distance. How about ... Four-hundred ... thousand ... and forty three feet?

Papelbon's spring debut was disastrous all of the way around: Six runs, five hits and two walks allowed in 2/3 of an inning. He's coming off what amounts to a typical season for him in 2012 — i.e., very good. And remember, it's just spring training, in case you already forgot. Outings like that happen frequently. He could have been working on a new pitch, or refining old ones. Chris Branch of The News Journal of Delaware says Papelbon "didn't seem too worried" about the results.

All right, we're not either. It's just that, when Papelbon fails, it seems a little more spectacular than with most relievers.
