Minor league team offers to hire Bob Costas as its play by play announcer

While the rest of us thought "he's full of it" when Bob Costas told Joe Posnanski he'd like to broadcast a full season of minor-league baseball, the Inland Empire 66ers out in California saw a great opportunity.

And so the Advanced Single-A affiliate of the Los Angeles Angels have floated an offer to the NBC and MLB Network broadcaster: Their microphone is his for 2013 if he'd like to chase his dream while living in the San Bernadino Valley for a summer.

From the team's website:

"Mr. Costas is a legend and we would be honored to help him fulfill his dream of broadcasting for a minor league team here at San Manuel Stadium," 66ers General Manager Joe Hudson said in a statement. "Our fans would get a thrill hearing his voice and having him here at the ballpark. Mr. Costas would be very welcomed and we would make sure he feels at home as part of the 66ers organization."

Costas is probably associated with baseball more than any other specific sport, but it's interesting that he's never actually broadcasted a full season of baseball for one team. I actually wonder if he'll one day take the Dick Enberg route and settle down with a major league team to quench that thirst, though it's hard to see him ever walking away from those huge network paychecks. Or maybe he'll actually do the minor league thing one day. If that's the case, let it be noted that the 66ers were in line first.
