Jon Jay turns in entertaining circus catch (Video)

I thought it looked like a fan trying to spear a free t-shirt shot into the stands between innings. My colleague Tim Brown described it on Twitter as "the lonely girl at the wedding coming down with the bouquet." Whatever the description, there's no doubt that St. Louis Cardinals center field Jon Jay turned in one of the most entertaining circus catches this year with a juggling routine on a fourth-inning line drive by Houston's Jason Castro.

From Joe Strauss of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch:

Rather than allow the shot to beat him, Jay leaped to deflect the ball skyward. Tumbling, he batted the ball once before bare-handing it for an out and what he considered a great "recovery" more than one of his greatest catches.

"I definitely don't rank that among the top ones. The recovery was good but it wasn't like I got a great jump and had a bead on it," he said.

Not all outs need to be pretty, they just need to be made. And while Jay's didn't save a perfect game or clinch a postseason series, it did contribute to the Cardinals' 6-1 win in Houston, a victory that expanded their second wild card lead to 3 1/2 games. It also entertained the rest of us at home, which I suppose is a nice bonus.
