The Chicago White Sox and Los Angeles Dodgers flashed some serious lather in the Dodgers 7-6 win on Friday night. That included Dee Gordon's outstanding leaping grab and his diving backhand and throw later in the game.
But it was Gordon Beckham's use of his barehand, along with the "assistance" of teammate Paul Konerko, that produced the best of the bunch, and perhaps the play of the night in baseball.
Here's a look at the play that begins with a bunt attempt by the aforementioned Dee Gordon that he strikes just a bit too hard:
It was a remarkable play in that the hard-charging Konerko — who won't be confused with Keith Hernandez or J.T. Snow — had to change direction on a dime to get a glove on it. And then it turns out his deflection only complicated things further by pushing it away from second baseman Gordon Beckham's momentum as he raced to cover first base.
But amazingly, with that momentum moving him towards the bag and away from the ball's new path of flight, Beckham was able to snag it with his barehand to record the adventurous, and at the time critical, out.
It's a fantastic play. Not one that we'll be talking about for years to come like Mark Buehrle's between the legs toss on opening day 2010, but one that should be acknowledged and admired due to its unusual nature.
