The sense of satisfaction must be strong any time a major leaguer swings at a pitch and deposits it over a wall 300 or more feet away. But to do the same thing with a broken bat? I'll never understand how the primal surge of ego and pride doesn't compel the hitter to roar around the bases while flexing his muscles and waving the bat shards over his head.
Watch as Baltimore's Chris Davis hits a two-run homer with a snapped twig during Wednesday's 7-1 clubbing of the Pittsburgh Pirates:
Davis' strength has never been a big question, of course. When he was 22, he hit 17 homers over 80 games for the 2008 Texas Rangers and 21 for the team the next season. He's always struggled with strikeouts, though, and his weak OBPs led to being traded with Tommy Hunter to Baltimore in exchange for pitcher Koji Uehara. (more...)
