Your eyes don't deceive you, this really happened:
Score it 7-6-2-3. On the hometown call, Dodgers broadcaster Vin Scully said:
"Hello — the old Dodgers are back! A double play on back-to-back singles."
The surprised looks on the faces of Andre Ethier and Matt Kemp — priceless. It's a good thing for the Dodgers they won anyway.
With a 13-4 record, L.A. is tied with the Texas Rangers for the best start in the major leagues. Kemp looks like he'll leave no room for doubt (or failed FedEx deliveries) in the NL MVP race this season. But they're still imperfect beings. Kemp is not Superman. And the Atlanta Braves were alert on defense, particularly shortstop Jack Wilson and catcher David Ross.
Braves announcer Joe Simpson said the Atlanta infielders decoyed Kemp into slowing down by second base, and maybe they did briefly, but he was out by so much at home it didn't really matter. Simpson also said that third base coach Tim Wallach was waving Kemp home, but it looked like he was showing a stop sign to me.
Ethier — there's no excuse for him being thrown out. But it's a good thing he was, because of comedy.
