So far, so good for Johan Santana

It's funny. If you saw anyone walking around with so many bandages and ice wrapped around their left arm, you'd assume they were messed up something fierce.

But in a baseball clubhouse, it's a routine scene. Even when it's a guy like Johan Santana, who has spent the past few years battling an awful shoulder problem.

Staying routine, of course, counts as a big win for the New York Mets lefthander at this point in his career. And he was just that during his first spring training start on Tuesday, throwing 29 pitches over two scoreless innings. He walked one batter, allowed one hit and was able to hit 90 MPH on the radar gun.

Santana and the Mets will take it for now.

From MetsBlog:

"It's good to know I am able to throw all of my pitches without a problem," Santana said, noting that today was the first time in a long time that he threw a slider in an actual game. "I focused on my mechanics, and doing the right things."

We'll see how Santana feels once his arm thaws out. But for now I'm guessing he'll be glad to make the cover of the NY Post for something other than wearing a trash can on his head.

Spring training has started, so don't miss a beat ...
