Over the line? C.J. Wilson publishes Mike Napoli’s phone number on Twitter

Los Angeles Angels pitcher C.J. Wilson took to Twitter on Sunday to say hello to a former teammate and wish him a happy St. Patrick's Day.

Oh, and to give out that teammate's phone number for all to see.

Apparently as revenge for some mild trash talk, Wilson asked noted Irishman Mike Napoli of the Texas Rangers to give him a call at his "new" phone number. But the number broadcast by Wilson was really Napoli's. As of early Monday morning, if you call Napoli's number — as many obviously have — you won't be able to leave a message because his mailbox is full.

Aw, he didn't.

Oh, yes he did.

Wilson and Napoli made the World Series last season as Rangers teammates, but the pitcher signed as a free agent over the winter with the Angels. He has about 116,000 followers on Twitter. Wilson deleted the tweet in question after awhile— no matter that it already had been re-tweeted a bunch — and added a follow-up:

Okay I think we've all had a good time, I'm even with mike for saying he can't wait to hit homers off me.

Even?! Wilson definitely overreached for revenge here. Under the Geneva Conventions of pranks, Napoli has the right to give away something of Wilson's. His phone number, for example. A preferred email. The coordinates of a secret box hidden under some rocks by a shady tree. After all, having to change your digits is no big deal to C.J.:

@Love4PatTheBat he's making 10 mil this year a new phone is basically free

A person's wealth doesn't make it any less of a pain in the butt to change a phone number, Ceej. And then there's this guilt trip:

@str8edgeracer Always been a fan, but why would u tweet a guys #?What if his fam had been trying to reach him for a 911? Perhaps I'm wrong — Denton Chris (@Rangers_Danger) March 18, 2012

Like being told by his parents not to play ball in the house, Wilson didn't like this angle much:

@Rangers_Danger it is a prank. You're familiar right? You can call Tmobile or Verizon and change it and still keep all your contacts

He's getting touchy. Good. He deserves a little discomfort for his unoriginal and not-that-funny prank. Besides, anyone can tweet a phone number. Does Wilson know that Jered Weaver already trod over this territory last year when he put Mike Trout's number on the scoreboard at Tempe during Angels spring training? At least Weaver got Trout's number programmed on a scoreboard. That took some HTML, or at least knowing a guy.

One final thought: If somebody tweeted Jeff Mathis' phone number, would anyone call?
