We know the Pittsburgh Pirates are in the business of acquiring a lot of young and cheap talent, but the location of their newest find really took things to the extreme.
Trevor Gooby — the team's director of Florida operations — helped deliver a baby boy to a woman who went into labor at the Pirates' spring training facility in Bradenton, Fla., on Tuesday night.
The baby's mother, Latisha Kirk, was about eight and a half months pregnant and was attending the spring opening of McKechnie Field when she unexpectedly went into labor near the front gate. Gooby saw the woman in distress, jumped into action and delivered the newest baby Bucco a few minutes later.
Gooby, 35, has two children and was in the delivery room when his wife gave birth, but that was the extent of his training as far as labor and delivery. But it seems Kirk didn't have time to be too concerned about Gooby's delivery skills.
"She pushed one time and the baby was out," Gooby said. "We wrapped the baby up in towels. He was crying and EMS arrived a couple of minutes later and cut the umbilical cord."
Gooby called the experience "a first" for him. It isn't known what position the boy might be suited for — or even what his name is — but the New York Yankees and Chicago Cubs have reportedly already inquired about a trade if the baby's salary demands are too high.
In related easy jokes, Maury Povich has been signed to a minor-league deal and is expected to arrive in camp by this weekend.
