Josh Hamilton’s exploded bat hits Danny Farquhar during Mariners double play

He's OK, folks. He's OK. Seattle Mariners right-hander Danny Farquhar tried his darnedest to get out of the way of a sharp piece of bat schrapnel — jumping in the air like he just don't care — but the half-barrel still hit him on the left shin before he came back to Earth, landing on his tailbone in front of the pitcher's mound.

Double ouch!

Farquhar was fine, and the Seattle Mariners even turned a double play on Josh Hamilton and the Los Angeles Angels during the carnage. How about the concentration on the part of infielders Brendan Ryan and Nick Franklin to turn two, with their pitcher getting flipped and a broken bat flying through their respective field of vision? It actually looked like a piece of performance art that the M's and Halos probably couldn't repeat if they tried.

Thumb's up, says Farquhar. It might have seemed a lot of work, and pain, just to avoid getting hit by some wood, but that broken barrel looked deadly, like it had been sharpened for Dracula. You don't want to get stuck with one of those. So his gymnastics routine makes perfect sense, even if it didn't work completely.

The Angels ended up pulling an even bigger magic act, clawing back from a seven-run deficit (in a game started by Felix Hernandez, no less) and winning 10-9. Still, Hamilton went 0 for 4 from the seventh hole and nearly impaled a guy. Just what he would have needed.
