Fans saw the future at Turner Field on Tuesday, and it looked pretty bright for the New York Mets.

[Jeff Passan: Future is now for Mets thanks to imposing pitching duo]

Zack Wheeler made a successful major league debut in the second game of a doubleheader, throwing six scoreless innings, helping to secure a sweep against the Atlanta Braves in a 6-1 victory. Earlier, Matt Harvey took a no-hitter into the seventh, he struck out 13 and the Mets held on for a 4-3 win. In all, a fun glimpse into what might be, for a rebuilding franchise.

''I hope people saw this,'' said manager Terry Collins, no doubt referring to New York's long-suffering NL fans. ''Certainly they're going to enjoy watching these two guys for a long time. They're going to be around.''

Wheeler, who came over from the Giants organization in the Carlos Beltran trade in 2011, certainly drank it all in. He went back to sign autographs for fans after the game while still wearing his full uniform. Wheeler allowed four hits and five walks while striking out seven. Anthony Recker broke a scoreless tie with a two-run home run against Paul Maholm in the seventh inning.

The Mets improved to 27-40 overall, so GM Sandy Alderson is still perhaps another dozen additions away from turning the ship around completely. Even Harvey, who will be the team's ace for years to come, has work to do covering first base. Slugger Lucas Duda, in training at that position, later took the blame for messing up Harvey's no-hit bid on Jason Heyward's slow tapper. But Harvey's the one with the ball, noted Braves broadcaster Tom Glavine, and flipping it to the umpire will never result in an out. Unless you're in a "Naked Gun" baseball scene.

MORE SCORES

Dodgers at Yankees, ppd. (rain): It was disappointing to have a washout for the Dodgers first trip to Yankee Stadium since the 1981 World Series, but at least we get a Hyun-Jin Ryu vs. Hiroki Kuroda matchup in the rescheduled doubleheader opener Wednesday afternoon. Far-eastern Asia baseball bragging rights hang in the balance!

Red Sox 5-3, Rays 1-1: Jonny Gomes, that former Rays scalawag, clinched a sweep against his old team with a two-run homer against Joel Peralta in Game 2. The Red Sox were pumped, having lost four of six coming in, and showered Gomes with love at home plate. Wil Myers, making his much-anticipated major-league debut, went 1 for 7 in the doubleheader.

Diamondbacks 3, Marlins 2: Slugger Paul Goldschmidt hit a game ender against ... was that Chad Qualls?

Giants 5, Padres 4: New guy Juan Perez didn't let the Padres beat the Giants this time; He threw out a runner at the plate and drove in the go-ahead run with a two-out single in the eighth.

Orioles 5, Tigers 2: That makes three home runs for J.J. Hardy against Justin Verlander this month. Verlander's ERA is 3.72.

Blue Jays 8, Rockies 3: Right-hander Esmil Rogers has been a godsend to the pitching rotation for the Jays, who have won seven straight. They're not out of it.

Pirates 4, Reds 0: Thus ends Mat Latos' streak of 21 starts without a loss. He accounted for nine of Cincy's 17 strikeouts, but Charlie Morton and the Bucs bullpen allowed just four hits.

Indians 4, Royals 3: The Royals missed a chance to move over .500, handing the game to the Indians with a bullpen collapse and some strange baserunning in the ninth inning.

Cubs 4, Cardinals 2: Samardzija >>> Wainwright.

Athletics 6, Rangers 2: The great Yu Darvish pitches more like Who Darvish against the A's for some reason.

Twins 7, White Sox 5: When playing the Twins, don't let Joe Mauer beat you. And sometimes Ryan Doumit.

Mariners 3, Angels 2 (10 inn.): Kendrys Morales helps the M's keep pace with the Angels — whoodathunkit? — with an RBI single in the 10th.

Astros 10, Brewers 1: How about that Matt Dominguez? A grand slam and sac fly to back Jordan Lyles.

Phillies 5, Nationals 2: Cliff Lee might not have won "The Voice" but he did help to knock the Nats two games under .500 — and into a second-place tie with the Phillies.

''I really want to knock this June bugaboo. I've been working really hard and I like where I am today.''

— Jeff Samardzija, on his 7.14 ERA in June in eight career starts coming into Tuesday.

I hope the Angels have a few of these Mike Trout caps left over, because I might need a couple. For friends.

• Cliff Lee lowered his ERA to 2.53.

• The A's are 25-11 since May 11, best in the majors since that date.

• Juan Perez has four assists already.
