The Juice: Puig-mania! Yasiel homers twice, drives in five runs in second game

The Juice returns for season No. 6! It's almost eligible for free-agency! Stop by daily for news from the action, along with great photos, stats, video highlights and more.

Just imagine what Yasiel Puig will do in his third game.

One night after helping the Los Angeles Dodgers win with his throwing arm, Puig hit two home runs and knocked in five to lead them to a 9-7 victory against the San Diego Padres. Puig's first homer was a three-run shot against Clayton Richard that tied the score. His second deep came in the next inning as part of another tiebreaking rally. The Dodger Stadium crowd gave him curtain calls both times. He also led off the bottom of the first with a double, so he has five hits in two games.

From the Associated Press:

Puig became the first Dodgers player with more than one homer in his first two career games, and the first to have five RBIs in that span since Spider Jorgensen drove in six runs on April 17, 1947, against the Boston Braves, according to information provided to the Dodgers by Elias Sports Bureau.

Everybody knows that Puig >>> Spider, (except in Charlotte's Web). Puig's popularity might not eclipse that of Fernando Valenzuela, who rode his screwball to fame and fortune in the 1980s with the Dodgers, but Puig appears to be giving it his best shot. He's got two near-legendary games in the books already.

MORE SCORES

Rockies 5, Reds 4: Upon further review, a big home run by Troy Tulowitzki stands.

Angels 4, Cubs 3: Pretending he was still on the Cardinals back in the days of yore, slugger Albert Pujols connects on a two-run homer in the eighth to take the lead on his old friends from Chicago. The Angels just needed the Astros to leave town, is all.

Diamondbacks 7, Cardinals 6 (14 inn.): Let's do this thing, Paul Goldschmidt.

Giants 2, Blue Jays 1: It seems like Tim Lincecum's first win since about 2010.

Mariners 7, White Sox 4: If all a team needed were Raul Ibañez and Felix Hernandez, the Mariners would be in first place.

Yankees 4, Indians 3: Mark Teixeira, heating up in June as usual.

Tigers 10, Rays 1: You do not treat a pitcher like Matt Moore like that! Unless he has no feel for his curveball.

Red Sox 17, Rangers 5: Jackie Bradley Jr. with a big night, just like he promised in spring training. The Red Sox scored at least once in innings 1-8, but couldn't score against slugger David Murphy when he pitched the ninth.

Twins 3, Royals 0: And the George Brett Effect has worn off.

Orioles 4, Astros 1: A six-game winning streak was long enough for the 'Stros.

Phillies 7, Marlins 3 (11 inn.): Courtesy of John Mayberry Sr.'s son John Mayberry Jr., a game-ending grand slam: One of the most exciting plays in sports!

Braves 5, Pirates 4 (10 inn.): The game-ending double is the 39th-most exciting play in sports!

Nationals 3, Mets 2: The game-ending sacrifice fly is the 444th-most exciting play in sports!

Brewers 4, Athletics 3 (1o inn.): And yet another game-ending double! Ryan Braun had nothing to do with the outcome, but what are your thoughts on the new Biogenesis revelations, Ryan?

''I've already addressed everything related to the Miami situation. I addressed it in spring training. The truth has not changed. I don't know the specifics of the story that came out today, but I've already addressed it. I've commented on it. I'll say nothing further about it.''

Ryan Braun

• Yoenis Cespedes of the A's slugged two home runs, giving him 21 extra-base hits of his 44 total hits this season.

• Matt Moore of the Rays allowed six earned runs to the Tigers after allowing 15 all season coming in.

• In beating the Mets, the Nationals won for the first time this season after having trailed in the sixth inning or later.
