Cliff Lee of the Philadelphia Phillies needed three outs for a shutout, but the San Diego Padres rallied against him and the bullpen for three runs in the ninth inning and one in the 10th for a 4-3 victory Monday night at Petco Park. The biggest hits came from Kyle Blanks, who drove in a pair in the ninth with a single, scored the tying run on a passed ball with Jonathan Papelbon on the hill and, an inning later, connected against Justin DeFratus for a bases-loaded single with one out to end the game. It was Blanks' career-high fourth hit, and it improved the Padres record to 39-38.

Implosion: Despite a rough ninth inning, the Phillies were one out away from victory. With Blanks at third base and Mark Kotsay at the plate in the ninth, a 2-0 swinging strike eluded catcher Carlos Ruiz and went to the backstop. Blanks rushed in from third and just beat a throw to Papelbon covering the plate. Papelbon had blown his fourth save in five chances after converting 13 straight to start the season. An inning later, the Phillies record would drop to 36-41.

''I don't know what is worse, losing 15-0 or getting beat that way. Either way, it's a loss and it doesn't sit well with me,'' Papelbon said.

What Brown can do: After making a bad initial read, Phillies outfielder Domonic Brown recovered and sprinted in to make a great catch to rob Jesus Guzman and help keep the Padres off the scoreboard in the seventh.

Wil Myers!: The Tampa Bay Rays hit three consecutive home runs in the second inning, with fresh rookie Wil Myers going deep in his first Tropicana Field at-bat. His home run came between deeps by James Loney and Sam Fuld — now there's a trio — against Toronto's Esmil Rogers. The Blue Jays' 11-game winning streak had been mortally wounded.

The offense, plus a sound outing by right-hander Jeremy Hellickson, made for a 4-1 victory.
