Baseball: Momentous White Sox error makes Mets broadcaster Gary Cohen’s voice crack

The error itself, coming Tuesday night on a routine popup that someone on the Chicago White Sox infield should have caught, was funny enough. But nobody in the world could stop from laughing after New York Mets broadcaster Gary Cohen screamed "It FALLS!" in falsetto after Gordon Beckham muffed a pop by Daniel Murphy that fell perhaps 50 feet in front of home plate.

You would have thought Hawk Harrelson, on the White Sox broadcast, would have been the one to crack on a play like that. But no, it was Cohen's voice!

The stupendous mistake, coming with two outs in the ninth inning, allowed the Mets to tie the score. The White Sox somehow overcame their embarrassment and won the game in the bottom of the ninth inning, which saved a 13-strikeout performance by left-hander Chris Sale.

But this game was all about the error on the popup, made even more notorious by Cohen's squeaky call. "It FALLS!" I could play it over and over again. The most famous Mets-Cubs moment has to be when the black cat crossed Ron Santo's path in 1969. Now the Mets and White Sox have a "moment" (as if anybody were pining for one).

No GIF could ever capture the true impact of the miscue, because those kinds of animations don't have sounds and Cohen's squeak would have to be excluded. The Age of the GIF is ovah!

Taking Vin Scully out of the equation, there's no better broadcaster of Major League Baseball than Gary Cohen. He's got all of the basics down, he's obviously a Mets rooter but isn't obnoxious about it and he's masterful handling analysts Keith Hernandez and Ron Darling. No offense to those guys, who are fine, but I'm trying to imagine a Mets booth with Cohen and David Cone for 162 games. I'd watch most every night.

However, that doesn't mean we can't look at the big goof-up, frame by frame:

An innocent pop up. Note that everyone in the frame has found the ball. Many are pointing. A lone female, in the upper-left corner, texts away blissfully unaware.

My favorite thing in baseball is when the pitcher, who almost never makes a play on defense, points up to the sky as if to say, "There it is!" Thanks for the tip, buddy. Addison Reed, you silly.
