There's an interesting subplot to Pittsburgh Pirates top pitching prospect Gerrit Cole making his major-league debut on Tuesday. Sure, he's the 2011 No. 1 overall draft pick, so how well he produces with such a pedigree will be the headline. But this is a fun aside: Cole's girlfriend is Amy Crawford, sister of Giants shortstop Brandon Crawford.
And as fate would have it, Cole's first start is against those same San Francisco Giants.

On a day that's already going to be full of nerves for Cole, facing his girlfriend's big brother probably won't add too much more. But it definitely puts Amy Crawford in the middle of things. She identifies herself as a Giants and Pirates fan on her Twitter profile. Big brother Brandon told CSN Bay Area's Andrew Baggarly:
"She'll probably have one of those half-and-half hats."
Actually, Amy let slip her allegiance on Twitter, saying she would be sitting in the home section (aka the Pirates side) — can't blame her for that. It's just another game for her brother. It's a much bigger deal for her boyfriend.
Makes you wonder what's best-case scenario if you're Amy Crawford. Boyfriend Gerrit pitches strong, not surrendering a run in seven innings, but giving up two hits, both to Brandon Crawford? Sounds like something she could root for.
