Brian Cashman on A-Rod tweeting rehab update: ‘Alex should just shut the [expletive] up.’

Alex Rodriguez's decision to update his recovery from hip surgery via Twitter on Tuesday has New York Yankees general manager Brian Cashman fuming mad.

Visit from Dr. Kelly over the weekend, who gave me the best news - the green light to play games again! http://t.co/RuzfXOJjHI

The tweet in question seems honest and innocent enough. In fact, it's not all that uncommon for injured athletes to update their condition via Twitter, and even though we know most sports franchises would prefer their employees refrained from it, rarely are there ramifications.

However, the problem here is that Dr. Bryan Kelly is not the Yankees’ team doctor. Yes, he's the doctor who performed A-Rod’s hip surgery, which means his opinion in the process is valued, but ultimately it's up to the Yankees team doctors to give A-Rod clearance. To this point, that has not happened, and in no uncertain terms Cashman made it clear while talking to Andrew Marchand of ESPN New York on Tuesday evening that he wants A-Rod to keep his mouth shut until the Yankees make their own determination.

"You know what, when the Yankees want to announce something, [we will]," Cashman told ESPN New York. "Alex should just shut the [expletive] up. That's it. I'm going to call Alex now."

Did I say fuming mad? That may have been an understatement.

Also, I wish really someone had recorded the phone call that followed.

To be serious and completely honest, though, I can understand Cashman's frustration with A-Rod's comments since it could put the Yankees in an awkward position should they decide on a different timetable. That said, you also have to question Cashman being so brash about it. Does his decision to go that strongly at A-Rod publicly make him look any better, or did he do it knowing it would add more fuel to the fire and that the court of public opinion would side with him?

Only he knows for sure. Either way, I believe A-Rod has already solidified what our Mike Oz suggested would be the case once A-Rod ventured into the land of 140 characters: Alex Rodriguez and Twitter aren't going to mix very well.
