Alex Rodriguez issues a statement to say he’ll comment about Biogenesis ‘when appropriate’

In a total A-Rod move, the embattled Yankees slugger issued a statement Thursday about the latest Biogenesis developments — among them, that MLB is trying to suspend him and others connected to the Miami-area clinic that's alleged to have provided PEDs to numerous players.

Well, it wasn't really a statement about that. It was a statement saying that he'd comment later. When he deemed it appropriate. So it was a non-statement about a possible future statement. See, A-Rod move.

Here's what he said:

''Myself and others are being mentioned in a media report before the process is even concluded. I will monitor the situation and comment when appropriate. As I have said previously, I am working out every day to get back on the field and help the Yankees win a championship. I am down here doing my job and working hard and will continue to do so until I'm back playing.''

The statement came from A-Rod's new spokesmen Ron Berkowitz. Yahoo! Sports' Jeff Passan has a column out about A-Rod's situation with the Yankees, with Biogenesis, with his possibly bum hip and with this new publicist. It's a good read. Here's a snippet:

Despite public declarations of support, the New York Yankees desperately hope the injury forces him into retirement and allows them to cash insurance policies on the $100 million-plus remaining of the most ill-fated contract in sports history, a 10-year, $275 million albatross.

The ensuing fight is bound to get ugly. Sources with knowledge of the insurance coverage told Yahoo! Sports that the Yankees don't own one policy but more than a dozen that combined could cover up to 80 percent of his remaining salary. Which means that not only would Rodriguez need to volunteer to step away from the game, the companies would look deep into his beaten-up body to determine whether the Yankees have a right to cash the policies.

All of this comes amid another report that A-Rod didn't agree to pay off Biogenesis' Tony Bosch and that's why Bosch is singing to MLB. Perhaps A-Rod next will issue a statement to say he won't be issuing a statement about that salacious story.

Baseball season's in full swing. Don't miss a thing.
