Two grand slams in two innings: Marlins prospect Jake Marisnick makes like Fernando Tatis (almost)

Fernando Tatis remains the standard bearer in Major League Baseball for hitting two grand slams in the same inning — against the same pitcher — in 1999. It's a baseball record that is unlikely to be matched, much less broken.

Miami Marlins minor leaguer Jake Marisnick did his best Thursday night, hitting a grand slam in consecutive innings for Class AA Jacksonville. The slams came in the seventh and eighth against reliever Josh Ravin for Marisnick, who is rated the organization's No. 2 prospect after Christian Yelich by MLB.com. Marisnick came over from the Blue Jays in the mega-deal for Jose Reyes, Mark Buehrle and Josh Johnson.

You, the viewer, will have to supply your own excitement to the home-run calls; the announcer was obviously pulling for Jacksonville's opponent.

Marisnick drove in nine runs — the most in a Southern League game since Butch Garcia in 1989 — to key an 11-2 victory against Pensacola, a Reds affiliate. Marisnick is batting .248/.300/.440 with six homers in 27 games at Class AA.

Marisnick said he was grateful to major leaguer Logan Morrison, who is with the Suns while he rehabs following knee surgery. Via MiLB.com:

Morrison walked as a pinch-hitter in the seventh, scoring on Marisnick's first grand slam.

"It was awesome," Marisnick said. "He kind of had a lot to say to me. He watched some of my at-bats and he told me, 'Hey you need to relax, you're pressing a little bit.'"

In the end, Marisnick seemed a little awestruck at the record-setting night he had.

"I don't really have words for it, I'm still kind of letting it sink in," he said. "It's a special night and I'm enjoying it."

No problem, Jake. The minor leagues are for improving your baseball and your postgame interviews. This one came in a dungeon. But it seems like you're doing OK with both.
