John Lackey suffers biceps strain in first start since 2011

Not a good scene this afternoon at Rogers Centre in Toronto as Boston Red Sox starting pitcher John Lackey was forced to leave his start early after suffering a right biceps strain.

The injury occurred on a fifth inning breaking ball to Jose Reyes that appeared to get away from Lackey and missed it's intended spot by a wide margin. Then we saw Lackey's reaction, which was that of obvious pain as his right arm dangled by his side. Lackey immediately left the field with Boston trainers and could be seen rubbing his biceps area, so there was little mystery as to what was bothering him.

According to some viewers, Lackey was seen flexing and acknowledging the same area just a few pitches before exiting, which is troubling to hear considering the situation escalated and the injury apparently got progressively worse as he continued throwing.

For now, Sean McAdam of Comcast Sports Net is reporting the strained right biceps, which doesn't sound like a worst case scenario, but that hasn't calmed too many fears considering Lackey's injury history. In fact, Saturday marked his first start since 2011 after missing all of last season following Tommy John surgery. At this point, any arm injury has to be considered a potentially huge setback, but that's o nly speculation until we hear a more concrete update on his condition.

If that update happens to come today we'll certainly pass it along. For now though, here's to hoping it's nothing significant.
