Things got ugly in the sixth inning of the Los Angeles Dodgers-San Diego Padres game Thursday night when Dodgers pitcher Zack Greinke pegged Carlos Quentin.
Here's how it went down: Quentin charged the mound. Greinke tossed his glove and lowered his shoulder. The two of them crashed into each other like it were a football game. The benches cleared. Bullpens too. Things calmed down a bit, while players, coaches and umpires yelled at each other. Then the two sides attempted a Round 2.
Matt Kemp was very visibly upset — he was almost hit earlier in the game. Angry Matt Kemp gave us the best moment in all this ugly. That's Dodgers announcer Vin Scully quoting Kemp as saying "That's fertilizer" when he's very obviously saying something more explicit. Scully is in classic form here, proving he could call a boxing match just as well as a baseball game.
A few interesting facts: According to True Blue L.A., Quentin has been hit a league-high 97 pitches since 2008. Per a story dug up by @wilhud on Twitter, Quentin and Greinke almost got into a fight in 2009. All told, it's the third time that Greinke has hit Quentin.
The upshot of all this? Quentin, Kemp and Jerry Hairston Jr. were ejected. Greinke left the game, but it's unclear whether he was ejected or injured. Watching the video, you have to wonder if Greinke might have done some damage to his arm/shoulder.
The whole incident did do damage to the Dodgers' 2-1 lead in the game. Quentin's replacement Alexi Amarista scored after a Yonder Alonso single to tie the game 2-2.
Baseball is back. Don't miss anything.
