In a week filled with tragedy and heartache, the Houston Astros will do their part to honor the victims of the Boston Marathon bombing and the fertilizer plant explosion in West, Texas by observing a moment of silence prior to Friday night’s game against the Cleveland Indians.
But that's not all. The team will also do their part in helping the healing process for those affected in West and the surrounding areas by accepting donations of essential items during their six-game homestand which runs through Wednesday.

Here's a little more information courtesy of the team's press release, including the types of the state of Texas is requesting as they assist in recovery efforts.
In addition, the Houston Astros are encouraging fans attending games during this homestand against Cleveland and Seattle (April 19-24) to please bring donation items to assist with the relief efforts in the aftermath of the devastation caused by the explosion at the fertilizer plant this week in West, Texas.
The team will be collecting the following items, which have been the most requested by the coordinated relief effort: new diapers/wipes, gift cards for grocery stores or home supply stores, travel size toiletries, powdered sports drinks, toilet paper, hand sanitizer, non-perishable canned or boxed food items, clean sheets and towels (new or gently used) and unopened boxed or bagged dog and cat food. Cash donations will also be accepted and will be directed to the ongoing relief efforts.
If you already have tickets or plan on attending one of these games at Minute Maid Park we certainly hope you'll keep this in mind and urge you help out in any way you can. Collections will be accepted when the gates open 90 minutes before game time right up until first pitch at marked locations throughout the ballpark. The Texas Rangers have also set up relief efforts for the victims in West, Texas during their weekend series against the Seattle Mariners and will be accepting the same essential items listed in the Astros release. They will also host a Blood Drive on Sunday from 11 a.m. until 3 p.m. at the Texas Rangers Hall of Fame.
Our hats are off to both organizations for stepping up to help out at at time when people are hurting. We'll certainly do our best to pass along any further information about when and where donations can be made when it becomes available.
