PHOENIX — It sure didn't seem like Zack Greinke was fretting about Friday.
The Los Angeles Dodgers' new $147 million starting pitcher was scheduled to play catch for the first time since being scratched from a start earlier this week and sent back to L.A. to have his elbow examined.
The Dodgers seemed worried. Fans, of course, were hoping for the best. And Greinke? If he was worried about Friday's throwing session, he didn't show it. Maybe his nerves were eased by ... Kim Kardashian?!? (More on that later).
Greinke sat in front of his locker Friday afternoon, earbuds in place, seemingly gazing at nothing in particular while his teammates played ping-pong and ate lunch.
A couple hours later, he had thrown the ball 63 times from 60-90 feet, as reported by MLB.com's Ken Gurnick. "Pretty good" was Greinke's summation of the afternoon, per The Los Angeles Times and MLB.com.
After Friday night's game — an 8-1 drubbing by the Dodgers split squad against the Kansas City Royals' full squad — manager Don Mattingly was still in wait-and-see mode.
"He seemed excited about it," Mattingly said of Greinke. "You wait for tomorrow. See if there's anything residual and just move forward again. See where we're at."
The bizarre footnote on all this? The fact that Greinke — who has a knack for saying unusual stuff now and again— compared himself to a Kardashian. See what being a newly crowned L.A. millionaire will do to a fella.
Greinke got a PRP injection (that's platelet-rich plasma) earlier this week to help with his elbow trouble. Leave it to Greinke to know that Kim Kardashian was also down with PRP. Greinke told the L.A. Times:
"I saw a Kardashian got it in her face."
He knows his stuff. Kim posted a picture of herself on Instagram getting what the celebs call "a vampire facial." Same idea only Greinke's plasma was injected into his elbow, not spread all over his face. Well, as far as we know.
Perhaps this is the real Zack Greinke story: Does he watch "Kourtney & Kim Take Miami" religiously?
