Hanley Ramirez injured his right thumb diving for a ball at third base during the championship game of the World Baseball Classic on Tuesday night, and he'll get an MRI in Arizona as he returns to spring camp for the Los Angeles Dodgers. If it's a serious injury, it would be the second for the NL West in recent days, with the Padres also losing Chase Headley for 4-6 weeks because of a broken thumb. Among stars playing in the WBC, David Wright of the Mets also hurt himself, playing for Team USA.
Ramirez gave no comment, but coach Alfredo Griffin told reporter Bill Shaikin of the Los Angeles Times, "I don't think it's bad."
The Dodgers already been concerned about Ramirez because he has not been playing shortstop — his position in the majors — and need him to get reps before the season starts in 10 days. Even if the injury isn't serious, any lost time at Camelback Ranch will set him back in some way for the regular season.
The Dominicans beat Puerto Rico 3-0 and finished 8-0 in the WBC.
Jeter's ankle keeps him out of lineup again: Stiffness and in his surgically repaired left ankle will keep Derek Jeter out of the starting lineup Wednesday for a second straight day. An MRI performed Tuesday showed mild inflammation. Since playing in his first spring game March 9, Jeter is 3 for 11. Jeter, who turns 39 in June, broke his ankle during the AL playoffs.
Danks for nothing so far this spring:
Coming off shoulder surgery, the Cactus League numbers for left-hander John Danks of the Chicago White Sox have been ugly. He insists he's feeling fine, but the chances of him opening the season the DL are growing with every spring outing. Batters are hitting .443 against Danks, and he has a 16.36 ERA in four starts after he allowed 10 earned runs and 11 hits in 3 1/3 innings against the Reds on Tuesday.
Halladay's rapid weight loss: Right-hander Roy Halladay, who left his previous Grapefruit start because of a stomach virus, hopes to throw a bullpen session Wednesday and, if he's feeling up to it, will pitch again Saturday. However, the illness caused him to lose "maybe 10 pounds" in two days.

Schoop returns to Orioles from WBC: The World Baseball Classic was a success for the Netherlands, which made the semifinals in San Francisco with the help of major-league caliber players such as infielder Jonathan Schoop. Though he won't break camp with the Baltimore Orioles this season, Schoop appears on his way to the majors someday. Via the Baltimore Sun:
Schoop, a 21-year-old middle infielder ranked by Baseball America as the organization’s third-best prospect, played strong defense and batted .214 with a .313 on-base percentage in eight games. He had two homers, including a three-run shot in his club’s upset of Cuba.
“It was an exciting moment,” he said. “It was a 1-0 pitch and I wanted to get a good pitch to hit and I did it.”
Overall, Schoop said it was a tremendous opportunity not only to represent The Netherlands, but to showcase his talents and to help him improve his game. He played 124 games at Double-A Bowie last year, hitting .245 with 14 homers, and likely is headed for Triple-A Norfolk to start the season.
