Erik Bedard’s latest injury — strained butt

There may very well be a bingo card out there for Erik Bedard injuries. If that's the case and "strained butt" was the last square you needed, go shout "BINGO!"

Bedard, the oft-injured pitcher who was pretty good back in 2006 and 2007, has only pitched two innings this spring in Houston Astros camp. He was scheduled to pitch Saturday but didn't. He's dealing with a strained gluteal muscle, or as you and I call it, strained butt.

At 34, Bedard is in Astros camp as a non-roster invitee looking to score a spot in the rear of the rotation. Injuries, though, seem like a caboose that follow Bedard where ever he goes.

He's had Tommy John surgery and two shoulder surgeries in the past, and has tallied eight disabled-list stints — making the tail-end of his career shaky at best. He was 7-14 last season with the Pittsburgh Pirates and 5-9 in 2011 with the Seattle Mariners and Boston Red Sox. In hindsight, the Astros shouldn't be surprised if Bedard is a pain in the posterior.

Astros manager Bo Porter makes it sound like this latest injury hasn't gassed Bedard's chances of making the team. He told MLB.com's Brian McTaggart:

"He's been getting treatment, and hopefully we get him back out there soon."

Here's hoping Bedard can leave this latest injury behind him, have a 2013 that's just cheeky and help the Astros avoid the bottom of the new AL West.

In the meantime, let's all shake our rears to this jam. Well, except you, Erik Bedard. You have a strained butt to worry about.

Spring training is here. Stretch out with us.
