Josh Hamilton and the Angels are ‘close’ to deal

The Los Angeles Angels are poised to shock the hot stove market for a second straight year.

Josh Hamilton and the Angels are "getting close on a deal," according to Tim Brown of Yahoo! Sports. A source tells Jon Morosi of Fox Sports that the deal will be for five years while ESPN Dallas is reporting the Rangers have been told Hamilton will sign with Los Angeles.

The talks were first reported by Joe McDonnell of Fox Sports West on Thursday.

If the deal does go down, it would mark another surprising contract for Angels owner Arte Moreno, who played his pursuit of Albert Pujols close to the vest last winter. The Halos  have not been considered a potential spot for Hamilton, but the team may have been drawn in after seeing the market set around four or five years for the former AL MVP.

Also worth considering: Is this Moreno's way of responding to the Dodgers, his giant market rival that has been jolted awake by an infusion of cash over the past six months?

Whatever the case, landing Hamilton would be a coup — albeit a costly one — for the Angels. Not only would they be taking him away from the AL West rival Rangers, but they'd have the most potent lineup and outfield in the big leagues. Stay tuned.

Stay warm this winter ...
