It was easy on Wednesday night to tell the people who are new to watching the Baltimore Orioles from those of us who have watched their games the past few years.
There were those who saw Adam Jones as he pursued Derek Jeter's triple in center field and immediately blamed the misplay on his choice to blow a bubble as the ball sailed past him. Then there were those of us who know that Jones is a gum fiend and is so well known for routinely blowing bubbles midplay that it earned a spot on his bobblehead a few years back. His failure to corral Jeter's drive wasn't a product of anything but his weakness for getting good jumps on balls hit to the deepest parts of center field.
Still, no matter your level of familiarity with the habit, Jones' trademark involuntary action was quite noticeable in what would turn out to be one of the biggest plays of Game 3 of the ALDS. Jeter's hit scored Russell Martin on the play for the Yankees only run of the first eight innings. They'd later tie and win the game 3-2 on Raul Ibanez's solo shots in the ninth and 12 innings.

I'm not satisfied that I didn't catch the ball," said Jones, who was doing his customary bubble-gum blowing as he made the attempt. "To make an excuse for that would definitely not be me. I point-blank missed the ball. I don't know what happened. I thought it was where it was going to be and thought wrong at that time. It costs a run."
It'd later help cost the Orioles the game.
