TMZ: Tommy Lasorda expected to recover after ‘mild’ heart attack in New York

Los Angeles Dodgers legend Tommy Lasorda threw a scare into his many fans on Tuesday with the report that he had been hospitalized in New York after suffering a heart attack.

The good news, however, is that the heart attack is being described as "mild." The Dodgers confirmed that the 84-year-old former manager had a stent inserted to clear a blocked artery and is listed in stable condition.

"The doctors confirmed I do indeed bleed Dodger blue," Lasorda said in the team's statement. "I'm looking forward to being back at the stadium to cheer on the Dodgers."

From TMZ:

[Lasorda] was in NY representing the L.A. Dodgers at the MLB draft, which started [on Monday].

Sources tell us ... the heart attack was "mild" and Tommy is expected to be okay -- and the plan is for him to be released tomorrow.

People at the draft began to suspect something was wrong today when Lasorda was not present to announce the Dodgers' draft picks.

Lasorda appeared just fine Sunday, signing autographs at a media gathering and eating at an Italian restaurant in Brooklyn [...] even singing with an accordion player.

The omniscient folks at TMZ have video of Lasorda's duet with the accordion player — of course they do! — as a bemused Lou Piniella looks on.

It's great to hear that Lasorda will likely be OK from this episode, but baseball fans will remember that this is not Lasorda's first problem with his ticker.

Lasorda was still managing the Dodgers back in June of 1996 when he experienced what he thought were abdominal pains after what turned out to be his final game. He drove himself to Centinela Hospital in Inglewood, Calif., where it was discovered that he was actually suffering a heart attack. Lasorda would undergo surgery and officially retire from managing a month later. He credited the doctors at Centinela for saving his life and the hospital now hosts the Tommy Lasorda Heart Institute.
