GLENDALE, Ariz. — Back in February, Los Angeles Dodgers blog Mike Scioscia's Tragic Illness caught wind of Javy Guerra and James Loney attending the premiere of HBO's baseball comedy series "Eastbound and Down." But the players did more than watch a screening of the first few episodes of season three, and rub elbows with star reliever Kenny Powers (played by Danny McBride). Guerra and Loney were persuaded by producers of the show, along with comedic hooligans Funny or Die, to photobomb guests at the party.
What is photobombing, some of you might ask? It's sticking your face in someone else's picture and either ruining it or making it a thousand times better — all depending on your point of view:
Guerra, the Dodgers closer, has had to work at pitching. But photobombing appears something he was born to do. Just ask Marilyn Manson.
"I love 'Eastbound and Down' — Kenny Powers is one of my favorite guys," Guerra said (as if Powers were a real person). "And asked if they wanted to go photo bomb. I'm like, 'What is that?' But it was a good time."
This would just be a photo of two women on a sofa, if not for the Dodgers relief pitcher creeping around a pole. "Hey, laaaa-dieeees." As MSTI points out, someone ought to make a photoshop contest out of this, inserting Javy Guerra into famous situations in history.
But this is Big Game photobombing — Mr. Dope Show himself — Marilyn Manson. Guerra didn't quite get all of his face in there, though.
That's better. You might be wondering: Did Manson get upset at the photo takeover? Why, yes!
"He got a little pissed, you could just tell," Guerra said. "He's a big fan of the [Kenny Powers] show and I didn't want to ruin it for him, so I feel kind of bad. But it was more or less just a gimmick."
So's the save as a statistic, Javy. But I kid Jerome Holtzman! Don't apologize for either, man. It's totally in the spirit of "Eastbound." It's funny what a natural Guerra is at photobombing, especially for someone who claimed he didn't know what it was. With so many red carpet premieres in greater Los Angeles, might Guerra make a second career of this?
"Realistically we're ballplayers first and foremost," Guerra said. "But you give us the offseason, when there's time to kill, why not go and be an idiot if they let you, and want you to?"
Yeah, but if Guerra happens to be struggling as a closer in June, fans might be clamoring for pictures of Kenley Jansen photobombing Marilyn Manson.
"I think that stuff works itself out," Guerra said. "Right now, I'm slated to be that guy and my goal is to be the ninth-inning guy. That's what they're expecting me to do. That's my job.
"Kenley and I came up together. He's amazing. He's a special talent. More than anything, he just pushes me to work harder."
Guerra says he is pumped for the new season of "Eastbound," which puts Kenny P. back in the states after a season down Mexico way. Guerra also has struck up a relationship with McBride on Twitter. Make that relationship with McBride's alter ego.
"I only talk to Kenny," Guerra said. "I talk to the Kenny personality and I love Kenny. Every part of it is hilarious. Hopefully he comes out to the field this year. Hopefully, he'll come play catch or throw out a first pitch or something."
