Sale? Sold! White Sox sign pitcher Chris Sale to $32.5 million contract extension

After a breakout season in 2012, Chicago White Sox pitcher Chris Sale got a handsome reward. He agreed on Thursday to a five-year, $32.5 million contract extension that'll keep him in White Sox jersey until at least 2017.

The new deal voids Sale's current contract, which would have paid him $600,000 this season. MLB.com's Scott Merkin breaks down the rest of the cash:

Under terms of the contract, Sale, who turns 24 on March 30, will receive $850,000 in 2013, $3.5 million in '14, $6 million in '15, $9.15 million in '16 and $12 million in '17. The White Sox hold options for '18 at $12.5 million and for '19 at $13.5 million. If either option is declined, Sale will receive a $1 million buyout.

After a 2011 spent in the bullpen, Sale was money in the White Sox starting rotation in 2012. He went 17-8 with a 3.05 ERA and 192 strikeouts against 51 walks. The 6-foot-6 hurler is the young pup in a White Sox rotation that includes Jake Peavy, Gavin Floyd and John Danks. His aforementioned 24th birthday being two days before opening day.

About opening day: White Sox manager Robin Ventura hasn't announced his starter yet. Peavy and Sale have taken turns propping each other up for the job. Of Sale, Peavy has said: "Chris is the best pitcher on the team. Your best guy goes opening day."

He also gets paid before opening day.
